Trance Labels - Signing with a Trance Label

Trance labels aren't hard to come by - there are loads! Although, with the growth of media on the internet hundreds of new labels have sprung up that specialise in Trance music. Many of these new internet labels are quite small and may not have the authority to truly push your material, either in terms of marketing or their reach. So how do you know you're signing with a good label?

If you can't get an established physical Trance label to sign you, for whatever reason, first of all I'd be asking why. If it's something that can be fixed you might want to approach them again once you've addressed any issues and see if you can get somewhere with the labels that showed some interest or offered feedback.

Failing that, you should consider signing with an online Trance label. These also have the potential to cover a wide territory since they work online for the most part so covering a global territory is no difficult task.

Large online record stores and MP3 download stores operate globally so your track will potentially be available to a huge number of potential buyers. As online Trance labels are spending less on distribution and pressing and with fewer overheads than a physical media label you'd think that online labels would have more funds to put into marketing the release and making it a success. You need to be aware that this isn't always the case.

I've come across some Trance labels that believe simply releasing the track into the online world is enough. Uploading it to BeatPort, iTunes, AudioJelly and TrackItDown will get you and them the sales you've dreamed of. You can hear from my tone that this rarely is the case - so you need to be selective when it comes to agreeing to signing with a label if you’re to get what you want.

Some Questions You need to Ask Yourself

Do you need a Trance label that can deliver in the physical world as well as on the internet?
Do you need additional music marketing for the release?
Do you need to master your track before anyone will sign it?
Where do you want the track to be released?

Some Questions You Need to Ask Your Label

Will you market the track and do what you can to make it successful?
What does this involve and how long is it actively promoted for?
What will you do to publicise the release? Send to DJs, radio stations, social media marketing, press releases, encourage online reviews, launch party?

These are just some of things you need to be addressing before going ahead with any deal. If the answers aren't what you want from your label then hold of signing the contract just yet. A better deal will come along. If it's not far off the mark, consider it but if something doesn't quite feel right about the deal after asking questions and learning about what they do it probably isn't the deal you're after. Sign with another Trance Label.
